Prayers Answered sent in by Judy Fletcher '60 Hello Family and Friends, I just recently spoke with Betsy and she wanted me to send this message to each of you: Thank you for all of your prayers, cards, and concerns. I could feel God's presence here just knowing all of you were praying for us. You will never know how much you are appreciated! Tomorrow, if all goes well tonight, Tony is to be transferred to a room and we hope it will be on Mrs. Gracie Mathew's floor. She has been such a blessing to us! Tony's temp has gone down to normal to a slight low-grade, depending on which doctor checks it out. If his chest tube drainage is less than 200 ccs they are planning on removing the chest tube. He still has all of his skin staples in and they will be removed at another time. Tony keeps the nurses and me (Betsy) hopping. A doctor came by and there was Tony, alone, standing by the side of his bed. That was why he didn't get transferred today, he is still on medication that prevents him from thinking straight at times. They are hoping to wean him off of that. He doesn't even take pain medication now. He says he has no pain. Wanting water is pretty much all he can think about. He had a swallowing test today and failed it. So it is very important that he doesn't get anything by mouth or he would aspirate and be in really big trouble. Tony was to go home in about 12 days and he has spent 15 days in ICU alone. We are so grateful and thankful to our Dear Lord for helping Tony through this difficult and very dark time. We know all of your prayers played a very large part in that miracle. Please continue to uplift Tony and our family to God in prayer, he still needs all of them. We love you all, Betsy ( via Judy) *** I just want to let you know that I just called down to the University ICU and Sue Komick, my next door neighbor and dear friend, just came out of surgery about 10 minutes ago. Because they are getting her all situated, I can only say that she is stable and when they get her situated, I am sure that her Family will update David and me. We are taking care of their 2 doggies and several kitties today and they will also want to know how they are doing. Please keep Sue in your prayers as she now need to heal and not get any infections or set backs. I will keep[ you posted as to her status. Thanks so much, Judy and David Prayer Request sent in by Judy Fletcher '60 Danielle brought this request to me at PT, she is the secretary where I am getting my Therapy: Teddy- the son of our assistant pastor, Bill and his wife, Renee, has been put in the hospital with Viral Meningitis. He also has diabetes since he was a child. Also, his wife is pregnant and has been exposed. Teddy is having surgery today for a sinus infection and Fungus in the sinuses. Please Pray for Teddy Now and until he is well. Also remember Renee with her pregnancy. The Bible says to Pray Without Ceasing. Thanks so much, Danielle Let's keep this family in our prayers, with so many praying at once and often, God will hear and bless them and heal them according to HIS Plan. Thanks to all, Judy Class of 1960 Diane Hale 1979 Class agent

Fletcher Academy Class of 79: Mark Bowman 1311 Pechin Ave SE Roanoke, VA 24013 540-344-1565 Terry Matson 1960 Here are a couple of pictures I found of buildings that no longer exist on campus but that for those of us familar with them were our home - one of the boys' cabins and the other of the old boys' dorm. Included in the dorm picture is the old Dean of Boys home that Dean Kulisek and his family occupied while I was at Fletcher. The pictures reminded me of a little fun we had at Dean Kulisek's expense. Several of us boys were involved. The plot was to run the Dean around. 2 fellows were down in the barn area, a couple were in the area of the cabins and I was behind the dorm. Each of us had some sort of noise makers, mainly mouthpieces from our band instruments. The guys at the barn would sound off and when the Dean headed down there the guys at the cabins started up and so forth. I had just blasted off on my Trombone mouth piece when I realized the Dean was headed for me and not somewhere else as I had though only moments before. I was behind a small bush and just as Dean Kulisek came roaring in and tried to grab my arm I took off. I forget where I went but I didn't go back to the dorm until much later. Later the Dean tried to get me to admit it was me but I never did. Heather Land 1990 Class agent
Greetings to the class of 1990! I am so proud to be the representative/contact person for our graduating class and look forward to hearing from each one of you. As time goes by I've noticed that more and more of us are "missing" and the Alumni Association has no way of contacting a large majority of not only our graduates but class attendees as well. Some have moved out of the country, others have large families and have busy lives and so it's hard to keep up.
Melanie did such a great job for our 10 year reunion by collecting information and sending out a newsletter updating us on the latest and greatest in each of our lives. That was 6 years ago. Much has changed for many of you and I for one want to hear about it! Please email or write me with your new addresses, phone #'s, email addresses, and any pertinent information to pass on to other class members. I currently live in McDonough, GA, where I bought my first house almost 2 years ago. This July will be my 10th year working as a Dental Hygienist, 6 of which has been with my present employer. I travel daily to work with our mobile dental program, Help A Child Smile. We give comprehensive dental care to elementary and middle schools, group homes, and facilities housing abused or morally challenged kids. I spend most of my free time with friends and family or vacationing. Until I find the man of my dreams...I still remain single and loving it. Kathy Powers Withrow and I still talk and see each other as often as our busy schedules let us. I'd love to update everyone on each of your lives, but I need your input. My email address is: hland0@earthlink.net. My home address is 1022 Brush Arbor Circle, McDonough, GA 30252. I look forward to hearing from you soon, Heather Land Frances McCarter 1961 Class Agent

Then and Now
July 4, 2006 By: Victor Zill Monica and I hail from the dignified majestic solemn class of 1997. The class with zero troublemakers and girls that never ended up in trash cans. The class that is proficient at changing restroom signs at Interstate rest areas and the class that knows the fastest way to empty a silo of sawdust. I hail from the class that knows the intricacies of hot-wiring tractors and also knows that cat food does not taste good. I could go on but I think it wise to just state that I really enjoyed my experience at Fletcher Academy and all the friends (and teachers) I met while there. Everyone in Academy is faced with the decision of what to do after graduation (yes I did graduate). I had pretty much made up my mind that I was joining the military. The papers were pretty much complete and I had my ship out date assigned. I was going to learn the delicate art of being an Army Cavalry Scout because I was told that was one of the most exciting positions in the Army where I could break lots of stuff. Well my girlfriend during my senior year, Monica Tucker, was going to Southern Adventist University after she left Fletcher. We discussed at length what all of this would do to our relationship and I finally decided that I did not like the outcome. So I made my military recruiter mad, decided to also go to Southern Adventist University, and after six months of dating, asked Monica to marry me on graduation night. I know I chose the right path. University life is much more different and boring than life in Academy I soon learned. Everything is more expensive and there is not much free time for the kind of dignified fun I experienced in Academy. The first semester I decided to get straight A’s (and did) since I had never done that before. I majored in accounting because I knew that profession is always in demand, while Monica majored in Office Administration. We finally got married on May 25, 1999 and it was good to see a number of people from Fletcher at our wedding. Even our red-headed gymnastic coach and current supreme allied commander of Fletcher, Rob Gettys was able to make it. Close to our graduation in 2001 from Southern Adventist University we decided that I would accept a job offer as the accountant for the Mountain View Conference whose territory covers primarily West Virginia. After a few years serving in that capacity, I was voted in as Treasurer of the Conference. Shocking huh? On November 28, 2004 Monica gave birth to Alaina Marie Zill, our first little human offspring. Then just recently, on March 30, 2006, Monica gave birth to twin identical boys (human also) Anthony Victor Zill and Nathan Andrew Zill. Because of complications during the pregnancy the twins were born premature at 30 weeks instead of 38 weeks which is full term for twins. The boys had what is known as twin to twin transfusion syndrome and it can be fatal to one or both twins if not caught in time. The boys were delivered about 2 hours from home at a Hospital that specializes in complicated pregnancies. The boys weighed 2lbs 3ozs and 2lbs 15ozs with Nathan being the smaller one and the second baby out. They were in an intensive care unit for around three weeks before being transferred to a hospital near where we live. The boys were then at that hospital for another three weeks or so. Everything health wise now appears to be normal for the twins and we are very thankful. Now if we could only get some sleep! I want to let all the readers know how much I enjoyed my time at Fletcher Academy and how thankful I am to have met so many wonderful people. We all are different, but that difference provides the bedrock for new experiences and learning opportunities. In my current capacity as employer of teachers and other personnel, I find new appreciation for the tireless dedication of the teaching profession. I want to thank the fine teachers and staff of Fletcher Academy for all the work that you did during my years there, and for the excellent job that I am sure is continuing to be done. Despite my renewed appreciation, I can’t help but think how much more excitement could be added to the teachers’ lives if I had an identical twin when I was in school. I am sure that with our genes (Monica is mischievous), and identical twin boys coming soon to a school near you, that some teachers may want to retire early. Hello, Friends
Since our last communication I have heard from Linda (Dodge) Sutton who spent the past year getting three families moved—hers, her daughter's, and her mother's. She doesn't consider the experience interesting, but as memorable and hard work. I've also heard from Ginger (Harvey) Kirk. But, for the life of me, my middle-aged mind can't locate where I put her communication! But, I do remember that she is happy in Virginia managing the mail room for a university dormitory. Also, I have big news to share. My son, Jeb, got engaged in July to a lovely young lady whom he has known for 10 years. You will understand when I say they are truly meant for each other when I tell you that they are planning to bicycle from Maryland to Arizona for their honeymoon (or part thereof). News also reached me of the very recent passing of David Gardner's mother and George Whitsett's mother-in-law (same person). The hearts of any of us who have lost parents or other loved ones recently bend a bit toward theirs. Still, we get up and go on, one day after another. Here's what wakes some of us up in the mornings: Sonja: Getting up in the morning is not difficult because there is so much I want to do, to learn, and to see! And, since I am not independently wealthy my boss expects me to come to work every week day or I won't get paid!! Bill: My wife's dog. We are keeping her in the garage until I can get her dog house and pen finished (which I started over a year ago). Cheryl: I do enjoy my work. I have a great school, a super principal, my classes are fun to teach. My husband is the best, my children and grandchildren, though not perfect, are my life. I love my home and where I live. My friends are near and dear. I hope to get up many more mornings. Well, that's all the room we have. Tune in for morning moments next time. And in the meantime . . . write me about what you see happening in your life over the next ten years. (This time, use this e-mail address: beaglesk@verizon.net. Or snail mail, still 10267 Windstream Drive, Columbia, MD 21044). Kathy Beagles Editor and Curriculum Specialist GC Sabbath School and Pers. Min. Dept. 2005 Class Agents
Dear class of 2005,Can you believe that it has been over a year since we have graduated? And since we haven’t seen some of you in a while, we thought we would give you an update in all the happenings with the members of our class. August 6, 2006 Olivia Sawyers Worthen was the first person in our class to be married. She married Russell Worthen. Kristin Eszler and Dana Molina are currently nursing majors at Southern Adventist University. Jeff Owen and Rebekah Nicholaides are also enrolled at Southern Adventist University, studying in the fields of business and teaching respectively. Merrie Hildebrand is currently taking generals there as she is yet undecided. Sarah Carithers and Andrew Shaw have just finished at year at Southern Adventist University but will be completing their education at the University of Tennessee/Chattanooga. Sarah’s major is elementary education and Andrew’s is business administration. Ania Martinez and Jacqui Pendleton are both nursing majors at Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences. Tasha Ericson, Keith Wuttke, Chris Carney, Michaele Acary, and David Hernandez are all to be residing in the Hendersonville area for the next year. Tasha is studying at A-B Technical College. Keith is working for Fletcher Church’s audio/visual department. Chris, the hardworker in the class, continues to manage his business while taking some agricultural classes at Blue Ridge Community College. Michaele is now at home after having attended Weimar College, and is still deciding where to go from here. David is also home after attending Wildwood, and he is now putting into practice what he learned: health and massage. Two of the more adventurous members of our class, Desmond Gray and Dylan McClung, have decided to go over seas after spending a year at Southern. Desmond will be going to Antillean Adventist University in Puerto Rico, while Dylan will be spending a year in Italy learning the language. We hope everybody has a prosperous year this next year, please don’t forget to stay in touch so that we know where you are and we can update you later on. God bless. Your class agents, Dana Molina and Rebekah Nicholaides 8/17/06 Phil Draper
I thought that you might like to see how God protects His people. Some of us went to school with Phil at Fletcher Academy; others may know him from his playing the organ for Del Delker and the Voice of Prophecy. This is a chilling story. Please pray for this family.
Judy Fletcher 1960 Subject: Phil and Joey Draper (detailed) Phil Draper was accompanist for Del Delker at Voice Of Prohecy for a number of years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Friday night, 4 August 2006 Mesa, Arizona Our Worst Nightmare.......... All we wanted to do was have a little girl to love. And when Brittany came into our lives while we were in Inter America in 1980, we were thrilled. The miracle story of how we got her, had to smuggle her home, etc. is a story of incredible faith and triumph. Brittany was born in San Jose, Costa Rica 26 years ago. I flew down to get her when she was just one day old. She was so beautiful -- the light of our lives. Brittany had a wonderful mind, an incredible talent with piano and flute, etc. At age 14 we sent her to Mt. Pisgah Academy for the summer work program, she started school there, then transferred to Fletcher (where so many of my fondest memories and friendships were formed) but she didn't want to go there either. Finally, desperation, we allowed her to go to public high school At that time of her life, she began to reject church, family, everything we believed in. She formed new friendships and our terrors really began. When we went back to Voice of Prophecy, she went kicking and screaming. We put her in Newbury Park Academy but she stayed only a part of a day. She graduated from the public high school in California. It was difficult to watch this beautiful, brilliant girl go the way of the world -- and we often ask where we went wrong. But I truly believe that the "heredity vs. environment" argument is definitely won on the side of heredity. Brittany has inherited some tendencies that we don't understand. She once exclaimed, "I'm not like you!" And she isn't. But our love for our precious girl never diminished. There are so many stories of when we would go on an appointment to return to a home torn apart by a party that was thrown during our absence. Cars wrecked. Police called by neighbors. We dreaded leaving. She moved in and out. Came and went. And when we moved to Arizona, she stayed in California with a boyfriend. It was at that time that we suspect the drug usage began. We never suspicioned it while she was at home. The culprit is crystal meth. It has wrecked her ability to reason, care, etc. She has come and gone from California to Arizona. Finally, about eight months ago, I told her she could no longer live in our home. We could not take it! We have heard nothing from Brittany for these many months. We pray for her daily -- begging for a miracle on her behalf. We ask for someone to come in her life who will lead her back to God. (She was baptized at age 13 at the Fletcher church....a sincere commitment.) When we returned home from Arizona camp meeting in June, we were on a HIGH. It was a fantastic camp meeting, Del Delker came home with us to spend a few days. We looked forward to good times with Del, swimming, cooking, etc. Joey found a message on the phone from the mental health people saying that Brittany had checked herself into the mental health hospital. She was ready to be released -- was doing well -- and wanted to come home. We were terrified. But willing. She was our precious daughter and we could not refuse. And I thought long and hard about the story of the prodigal son....his father welcomed him with open arms. They delivered Brittany home, thin and frail, a size four....tired and weary When Joey greeted her at the front door, she exclaimed, "Thank God!" She went upstairs to her room and went to sleep. During the next few days, we bought her new clothes, cooked wholesome foods, bought vitamins, etc. She ate well, slept a lot, swam, but mostly stayed in her room. She insisted she wanted to go to church. I bought her a beautiful church outfit (along with all the other casual clothes...) and sure enough, she got up and went with us to church that first Sabbath. The first time in about ten years. Maybe twelve. We were so grateful. A miracle was happening.... Next Sabbath, she went again. But by this time she was beginning to deteriorate mentally. A little laughter that was inappropriate. Hearing voices.... We got her strong meds and they helped. The third Sabbath she went with us again. Went to Sabbath School, too. By the fourth Sabbath, I had to go early to practice with the praise team, I was also organist, so she didn't want to go early. And didn't want to go at all. She said she was very tired. I didn't push.... We did some family things, went out to eat, swam, she baked cookies. But mostly stayed locked in her room watching a small tv with only rabbit ears. Nothing but about two channels. She would come down for food, greeted us warmly, etc.... I had to go to TAGnet Tuesday, July 25, to work on the new conference website, a day trip. One of our secretaries, Lisa Sharpe, was to fly with me to Ontario, CA, we would drive to Fallbrook, CA, then return that night. Monday night I told Brittany that I would be going to CA for the day and would see her about six that night. Before I went to bed, I heard Joey say through her door, "Good night, Brittany, I love you!" Brittany responded genuinely, "I love you, too, Mom!" Joey said, "I think she's really getting better, don't you?" I agreed....thankfully! The big garage doors opened at 5 am...right underneath her bedroom. She knew I was leaving. I was on the plane by a little after seven. That's when she went to Joey's bedroom and our horror story began. We don't know what the motive. She had asked for Joey to put the phone on the hook at 5:30 so she could call a male friend. Joey begged a little more time, she was so sleepy... Brittany had one of the Dr. Hans Diehl CHIP knives, sharp as a razor, at Joey's throat when she awakened. Joey doesn't remember what happened next. There were about twelve slashes across her throat and chin -- and she doesn't remember them happening. Miraculously, they were superficial wounds. The CHIP knife is a razor-like serrated knife. Very sharp. To draw that across the delicate skin of a neck and do only superficial wounds would take precision....Joey doesn't have a recollection. She grabbed the knife and tried to wrestle it from Brittany's strong grasp. They made it to the double doors and tumbled down our very steep circular staircase -- 18 stairs -- and the knife fell from Brittany's hand. But during that struggle, Joey's hands were badly cut. In fact, the thumb on the left hand was cut to the bone, tendons, ligaments, vessels and nerves were cut. The other hand had nerve damage to the middle finger. Brittany ran to the kitchen to get another knife and Joey rushed and stood in front of the knife drawer exclaiming, "No, Brittany! You've done enough! God help us!" And Brittany suddenly became calm. She looked closely into her mother's eyes and said, "You're having a nightmare. This really didn't happen. Let's go clean up this blood and nobody will ever know." With that she took her mother by the arm and led her back up the staircase to the master bath and began splashing water on the neck wounds..... Joey would not put her bleeding hands in the water and Brittany suddenly walked away and went to her bathroom in the other wing of the upstairs and started washing her blood stained clothing. At that time, Joey grabbed the cell phone from her night stand, hid in the closet and dialed 9-1-1. The police kept her on the phone as she wedged the doors closed. She saw Brittany come by once then she left. The police, fire trucks, EMTs, etc. came in droves. They apprehended Brittany as she went out the front doors with bag in hand, jacket, and purse She had bus passes that would probably have been used to take her to a boyfriends house across town...where she could get meth once again. We can only guess. The police told Joey, "You can come out, Mrs. Draper, we've apprehended your daughter." They made her come out and would not let her back in until the police could search the house in case someone was hidden inside. Joey went to Mesa General for emergency room treatment. They called me but I was on the plane. When we landed, I turned on my cell phone, saw messages, but we were rushing to get the rental car and head down the freeway. About ten miles from the Ontario airport, the police called Lisa Sharpe and asked if Phil Draper was with her. I could hear this strange conversation and wondered why they insisted that I pull to the side of the freeway! When she said it was the Mesa police, I pulled over. The officer said there had been an incident at my home between my daughter and my wife, my wife was at the hospital and I needed to come home immediately! I spoke to Joey, she said, "Come home now. I need you." We turned at the next exit and rushed back to the airport, caught the 10:21 flight back to Phoenix, then the realization of what almost happened came rushing to my brain. I almost lost my wife. Only the angels held back that knife. Twelve marks vividly showed the evil intent. But she was not killed. We had to go by ambulance to another hospital for special hand surgery. The operation ended near midnight and lasted 2 ½ hours â?" long for that type of surgery. Her doctor was a specialist in reconstruction surgery. He managed to reconnect nerves, the flexor tendon, ligaments, etc. I slept at the hospital by her bedside as both hands were extremely bandaged and she needed total care. Dear friends came to the house and cleaned and cleaned so we would not have to see the nightmare of blood that was there. They accompanied us home, fixed us dinner, etc. And a week and a half of love from benevolent friends have continued to sustain us and buoy our spirits. We have been unable to find out anything about Brittany. She is booked with a type 3 Felony, very serious. Her bail was set at $108,000. The good thing is that she is safe, cannot get to Craig and the drugs, and we know basically were she is. She has food and shelter. And medicine. The mental health people have promised to go see her. Sabbath, I thanked God that I was not in the midst of funeral arrangements. Joey and I still marvel at the divine intervention. She was saved to serve. We pray that our precious daughter will get the help she needs. That she may find Jesus and peace. My dream is to enter heaven and watch her rush into my arms! Free at last.... Until then, we are busy with hand therapy three times a week. Joey's sister Dorothy, flew out today to relieve me with some of the care. I need to go back to the office next week. It will be good to have Dorothy here. Joey continues to praise God, witnesses to everyone at the clinic, hand therapist, etc. Her testimony has not been silenced....only amplified. In fact, they called from ASI asking us to book a concert in April. We thought, how can we do that at this time? But we said, Book us! We will go where we're asked.... And we love Brittany more than ever. She did not do this. The evil one did through her. Her mind has been clouded by his drugs, his ways, he has sought to destroy her and us. But there is a God in heaven who knows Brittany's genetic make-up, who loves her more than we do. Who will be overseeing her care. He knows how to save her -- we don't. And we're trusting that this story will have a happy ending. Not necessarily on this earth â?" for we dwell here just a short time. We want to spend eternity with Brittany. And we want you to meet her. You'll like her. She s beautiful, talented, charming. You should hear her play the piano.... One day! I really believe she will be there. We will live for that day. Thankful for all the prayers, good wishes, genuine friends, we continue to dedicate our lives to service to the Master! Love, Phil (and Joey) Feel free to share this with anyone who may gain from this experience....We're so totally thankful for God's mercy. Linda Gadd White
